A moment is all it takes for someone to pick your machine up and walk off into the sunset. Here are some measures you can take to prevent your laptop from being stolen; or even recover it in the event that it is.
- Buy a good Kensington lock: While it will not be able to withstand a dedicated physical attack, locking your machine with this will deter potential criminals by making it harder for them to walk off with your laptop. There are many models in the market, with some sporting combination locks or even vibration detectors and alarms.
- Sign up for a recovery service: Companies such as Absolute Software and Bak2U offer recovery services for stolen systems. What they do is install a background application which, once activated, will send the IP address on an Internet-connected laptop to the user.
